The invisible website: The amphicar.com domain was renewed for three years early in the morning, and then shortly thereafter for some inexplicable reason the domain's registrars decided to point the domain to one of those "Coming Soon!" placeholder pages they lob up for brand new domains instead of just continuing to point to the correct servers. The result was that the site basically flew off the radar for about 12 hours while the correction cycled through the computers that control domain names. As of 11:40 last night all is again as it should be. (3/4/2004)
Well, that was quick: the '66 "Yukon" Amphicar put up for sale last week on the Classifieds has been sold and the ad pulled (3/2/2004).
Rob Vondracek's got a website together at www.notsobigtrailer.com describing all of the amazing Amphicar parts improvements and handy accessories he's developed, so his big ad in the Classifieds had been trimmed back to a link to his new site at his request (3/2/2004)

Well, the annual "Brutal Pillaging of the Website" is upon us yet again as the Bilgemaster dons his fearsome leather hood-of-ears and inflatable gold lamé tights to mercilessly purge from our midst those unbelievers and other miscreants who have neglected to renew their memberships despite repeated calls to the faithful to do so since November in the Newsletters, on this website and also on the Amphicar-Lovers List. O Woe! Woe be unto those who have lapsed, for as the moon rises this very eve shall there be much wailing and gnashing of teeth and renting of garments and raising of these rents as Classified Ads and Member Profiles are cast into the fiery abyss! Woe I say unto you! In the meantime, here are just a few additions and corrections that've been made to the site in the Classifieds and Meet the Members profiles (2/28/2004):

And now it's 8:09 PM and the FrontPage extensions are the issue...again. The addr.com techs' earlier re-installation of which has apparently blown away all the tender tendrils that held together all of those navigation buttons, banners and so on. It seems that the first "great big complete re-loading" of the site to fix up the web that I had tried while I away was at work didn't "take", so it's time to try again. (2/20/2003)
It's the next morning, and it's looking like that nice gal in Bangalore must have been using a Punjabi keyboard or something. Another call to the Borg support beings reveals that she had made a minor typo...I guest that's easy enough to do with a big old dozen-or-so-digit IP address number. Finally the "cloak of invisibility" has been removed and the website is back in the land of the living web. (2/20/2004)
It's 10:59 PM, and I just spoke with a nice gal in Bangalore, India where it's 9:59 AM. Turns out it wasn't the FrontPage extensions causing the site to poop this time after all, but rather some misconfiguration of their own 'domain name lookup server', their box that points folks who type "www.amphicar.com" to the domain name's "real" numeric equivalent (2/19/2004)
"Web Hassles for Bilgey" ought to be the name of a friggin' reality show. Here's the premise: Mischevious data gremlins over which he has no control cause our hero to stare distractedly into space while checking his email every 30 seconds for signs of contact with mysterious and shadowy Borg-like beings collectively called "support@addr.com" who alone hold the strings of life and death on the wwweb...In short, it's looking a bit like those pesky Mi˘ro$oft FrontPage server extensions may have slipped their moorings...again, as they're wont to do from time to time for absolutely no comprehensible reason...Tick....Tock...Tick...Tock....Tick...Tock.... It turns out that problems with the javascript coding from that anti-spam email address encoder were causing the Classifieds page to give some web browsers indigestion. Thanks to web experts Big Al Heath and the Cap'n for helping track down the mis-coding culprit. Just for the time being, email addresses displayed in the ads will be using the simple 'myname "AT" blahblah.com' format to stump those address-harvesting spammer robots until a more elegant solution is devised. Several mysterious error messages plaguing the Classifieds page's coding. Would anybody who knows about such things please take a good look at the page's source code and drop Bilgey a line with correction suggestions, 'cause he's stumped. (2/16/2004)
The 'How Long Until Celina 2004?' countdown clock near the bottom of the Events Calendar page has been corrected to count down to July 23rd instead of the 30th. Thanks to Al Heath for spotting that. Fact is, the Celina gathering for Amphi folks is likely to actually start on Thursday the 22nd, with lots of folks even rolling into town as early as Wednesday, but Club plans and the schedule are yet to be finalized. For right now the countdown clock is set for 3:00 P.M. on Friday, the day the Lake Festival starts. (2/15/2004)

New user name and password setup prepared to access the Members Only Area. The current (2003) setup will remain active only until the next Newsletter comes out, so if you still need to join or renew your Club Membership, you'd better do it right now. Also, the battle against spammers continues: Some longstanding email contact addresses have had to dumped, and a new "auto-responder" address set up at to direct real folks appropriately, but baffle the spammers' none-too-clever address-harvesting robots. Just send an email, even a blank one, to the address to see how it works (you will receive a reply in seconds).
